Throughout the banquet hall, this was how it worked. Those whose lives were transformed by Homeboy were seated with those in a position to support the cause. Another case of Boyle sharing stories, making introductions, building bridges. And then came the video reel of homie tributes, some of them tearful. What’s extraordinary is the number of lives resurrected on the power of love and compassion. The work of Boyle and his committed brothers and sisters has woven a new set of narratives into the story of Los Angeles, with hope trumping despair.

The presidential office, in particular, stands out with its opulent furnishings and a sense of gravitas befitting the nation’s leader. Over the years, it has been home to several Ghanaian presidents, each contributing to its history and legacy. This was criticized because it was said that it was a way of glorifying Ghana’s Gold Coast past.

We live simply, love inclusively and listen attentively for the good and the protection of God’s creation. Thompson sat next to my wife and me and said he was flattered to have been invited to the banquet. I asked if he’s been able to develop a relationship with Father Boyle while at Homeboy, where dozens of staffers teach, mentor, are help young men and women build confidence and map out new lives.

Today, the building serves as the official residence and office of the President of Ghana, overseeing the nation’s affairs and hosting important state functions. In the post-independence era, the building was renamed Jubilee House in honor of Ghana’s 50th independence anniversary celebrated in 2007. It became the official residence of the President and the seat of government, a role it continues to fulfill with grace and elegance. His work has appeared in nine books and his photographs have been exhibited extensively including at the Smithsonian Institute and the Annenberg Space for Photography. I’d first spoken to Rodriguez last year, when he told me his late mother had been a soldier in Boyle’s quest to keep kids out of gangs and form truces among those who were already snatched away. In those days, Boyle could be seen on a bike, racing in the direction of gunfire. Also seated at our table was Ruben Rodriguez, who was raised with seven brothers, by their mother, in the projects near Dolores Mission, where Boyle worked in the days before Homeboy. Los Angeles itself is a study in transition, leaders and trends come and go, promises are made and broken. Father Boyle, who attended Loyola High and later taught there, is a constant, present in the lives of the marginalized, carrying kinship and compassion to baptisms, weddings, funerals.

From posh establishments that follow formalities to local spots that hit all the cozy notes, here now are 16 lovely places for afternoon tea in Los Angeles this holiday season. Formerly known as Flagstaff House, Jubilee House has played a pivotal role in Ghana’s political landscape since its construction in 1957. It served as the residence and office of the country’s first president, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, marking a turning point in the nation’s history by symbolizing Ghana’s independence from British colonial rule. Based on research by Raj Chetty & other economists, Jubilee knows that low-income families who live in mixed-income neighborhoods have better outcomes. In and around thriving Adams Morgan, Jubilee connects residents to resources, opportunities, and a supportive community. Afternoon tea also proves a wonderful social occasion for the sober community.

We create opportunities to help surface them and harness their potential. Working with residents, we develop programs that advance economic stability for youth and families, returning citizens, and people of various backgrounds who have had limited access to opportunity. Pathways for personal development include continuing education, financial coaching, career readiness and opportunities to increase savings and build credit. In addition to personal development, community members are invited to contribute to the progress of their neighbors through leadership opportunities on our Resident Council and Board of Directors. Since then, we have grown to encompass 13 buildings in Ward 1, serving more than 1,000 people with housing and supportive services each year. Today, as low and moderate income families are being squeezed out of the District due to lack of affordable housing, our work makes sure they can benefit from the progress of the city.

The previous seat of government of Ghana was Osu Castle. In 2013, the seat of government was moved back to its current location by John Dramani Mahama. In November 2008, it was reconstructed by the government of John Agyekum Kufour with the name Golden Jubilee House. In 2009, the office of the president was moved back to the Osu Castle by the government of President John Atta Mills and its name was changed back to its original name – Flagstaff House. Head to the 40-year-old Cat & Fiddle for a laidback afternoon tea with all the trimmings. We believe that compassionate communities are physical places as well as groups of people with a common purpose. Pleasant neighborhoods, including eight multifamily apartment buildings and two homes for returning citizens.

In this post, we delve into the fascinating history and captivating features of Jubilee House, a place where Ghana’s past and present intersect. For 46 years Jubilee has worked to foster access to resources and opportunities, reduce the equity gap, and to bring about justice, through housing – Justice Housing®. And if you save a search or property, we’ll email you when there’s an update. Many first time Buyers believe they can work without a Buyer’s Agent and instead use the same agent as the Seller. When both Buyer and Seller use the same agent, known as “dual agency”, it can sometimes save on fees, but it also puts the agent in a conflict of interest, not fully representing either party.

Pasadena’s Rose Tree Cottage serves one of the kitschiest and most charming teas in town. Cucumber sandwiches, scones with Devonshire clotted cream, and sticky toffee pudding are all meticulously served by a suited butler. Tea is served only on Saturdays & Sundays at 1 p.m. And 4 p.m.; reservations are taken by telephone a week in advance. The English tradition of taking a midday pause to refuel with crustless sandwiches, warm scones, and freshly brewed tea is alive and well in Los Angeles.

Jubilee has provided a supportive reentry housing program in the Adams Morgan area for eleven years serving over 200 returning citizens, without a single incidence of disruption to the neighborhood. The Reentry Housing Initiative provides transitional housing and wrap-around services for men and women who are looking to rebuild their lives in a supportive, drug- and alcohol-free environment. Jubilee operates two reentry homes which serve up to ten women and ten men at time. Jubilee Housing strives every day to be a responsible fiscal steward. We direct resources in ways that create economic opportunity, provide affordable housing, and implement supportive services for our residents and clients.

The majority of our housing is affordable to people earning at or below 30% of Area Median Income. Priced at $95 per person, afternoon high tea service takes place in the hotel’s Library and Ocean Terrace every Saturday and Sunday at noon and 3 p.m. Reservations are required via Fairmont Miramar’s website or Resy.

The use of local materials, such as hand-carved woodwork and locally sourced stone, adds a distinct Ghanaian touch to the building’s exterior. The Jubilee House is an iconic building right in the center of Accra on the ceremonial Liberation Road. It has stood as a symbol of Ghana’s rich history, political progress, and architectural grandeur.

Gun Barrel Steak & Game House Jackson Hole

Just entering the space is a visual buffet; one may notice anything from the old dioramas from the former museum to the intricate log work. Hank Williams’ original buffalo coat that he wore on the cover of his album “Lone Wolf” is framed proudly in the corner. And of course, the taxidermy is hard to miss – a giant bison sits right in the entryway in addition to other animal mounts that don the walls throughout the space. Usually if you go into a restaurant at 3 AM, your choices are slim. The guy in the kitchen knows how to make sandwiches, eggs, hamburgers and not much else. If there is anything else, he’s probably reheating something cooked by the day or evening chef.

About The Restaurant

No matter what the hour, you had a wide range of freshly-prepared options, sometimes even including a baked potato. Try getting a baked potato at any other restaurant in the middle of the night. Its prime rib was great…and I always thought it took guts to have prime rib on your menu when you’re that close to Lawry’s. The Gun Barrel Steak & Game House, which is locally owned and operated, opened in 1993 in what had formerly been the Wyoming Wildlife Museum & Taxidermy.

Jackson Hole's Legendary Dining Experience

Take in the Old West in our rustic lodge atmosphere while indulging in the valley’s finest steak and game, all slow-cooked over an open, river-rock mesquite grill. What makes this restaurant special isn’t just limited to what’s on your plate. From the history of the building to the decorated walls to the chorus of customers dining at peak hours, it’s clear that the Gun Barrel is a one-of-a-kind Jackson dining experience that shouldn’t be missed. The Gun Barrel is operated out of what used to be the Wyoming Wildlife Museum & Taxidermy. When the restaurant took over the building in 1993, the owners purchased some of the pieces from the museum – many of which still exist today.

If you google “Jackson Hole Steak House,” the first thing that comes up is the Gun Barrel. Many of the museum’s full-mount game trophies, which were taken from around Jackson Hole, can still be seen – some even in front of their original painted dioramas. In addition to these indigenous animals, there are numerous others from around the world, many of which were collected by us.

The Gun Barrel Steak & Game House name was taken from the small east Texas town of Gun Barrel City. The original 1950s hand-painted town sign was given to us by the town. Below are some unassembled matchbook covers, one from when Ollie Hammond’s had three locations in town. Until someone sent me this one, I only knew about the one on La Cienega. The one on Wilshire would have been near the Ambassador Hotel. The one at Third and Fairfax would have been very convenient to me and I might be there right now having a steak or that great hash.

About The Restaurant

Interview with an Indie Press: Coffee House Press Literary Hub

coffee house press

Coffee House Press began as a small letterpress operation in 1972 and has grown into an internationally renowned nonprofit publisher of literary fiction, essay, poetry, and other work that doesn’t fit neatly into genre categories. Following the small press movement of the 60s and 70s, the 80s saw an emergence of professionalization among small publishers. CHP’s late-founder Allan Kornblum saw an opportunity to create the sort of publishing house that he wished existed in the world. Coffee House Press has opened up a variety of interesting opportunities for their authors, readers and programme audiences. Their Books in Action programme and publications have allowed them to become interdisciplinary with seeking new work and audience experiences.

Coffee House Press currently publishes 18 books per year, split evenly among the categories of fiction, poetry, and essays, with an occasional wild card. The publisher also regularly donates to the Little Free Library project. To date, CHP has donated more than 12,000 books, which have traveled to Little Free Libraries in more than 40 countries.

This not only shines a light on interesting collections, but encourages the creation of new work and fosters creative engagement throughout the community. Coffee House Press has also been able to create the Reading Room project, a public space dedicated to quiet reading. This was held at the Walker Art Centre’s Open Field and at Minnehaha Park. Alongside these interesting programmes, the press has been involved in many other arts and culture projects. Since the founding of Coffee House Press, their roster of authors has received multiple nominations and prizes.

More to Read

And I have a soft spot for our Emily Books imprint, with titles like Myriam Gurba’s Mean and Hilary Leichter’s Temporary, which was great for us both from a sales and an amazing-freaky-books-by-women perspective. We’ve long recognized there are many possibilities for reader/writer exchange beyond (and even without) the page. CHP’s vision for the future is one where a publisher is more than a company that packages books. We are catalysts and connectors—between authors and readers, ideas and resources, creativity and community, inspiration and action. It is evident that this innovative press is successful in their goal of increasing global relevance and accessibility to literature.

We have the first book, Problems by Jade Sharma, coming up in the spring season. Remaining independent has allowed us to take meaningful risks and broaden our focus. Over the past few years, we’ve started to identify as both a publisher and an arts organization. Through our Books in Action program and publications, we’ve become interdisciplinary collaborators and incubators for new work and audience experiences.
